New technological developments by John Howell, a professor of physics, and Joseph Choi, a PhD graduate student at Rochester’s Institute of Optics student, have emerged out of the University of Rochester. The improvement in the ability to cloak or “hide objects from view” (University of Rochester) has now become easier and more affordable.
The concept should not be unfamiliar to those who have read or watched the Harry Potter series where Harry’s famous coat was used to sneak in and out of areas at his or his friend’s leisure. However, an invisibility coat is not the intention behind the latest design. Instead, Howell has other potential applications in mind including “using cloaking to effectively let a surgeon ‘look through his hands to what he is actually operating on,’ he said. The same principles could be applied to a truck to allow drivers to see through blind spots on their vehicles.” (University of Rochester)
What makes Howell and Choi’s design different from the others? The difference in the latest development is the use of materials that are inexpensive, common, and a design that is a “novel configuration” (University of Rochester). Using “a combination of four standard lenses that keeps the object hidden as the viewer moves up to several degrees away from the optimal viewing position” (University of Rochester) is an amazing progression from concept to reality especially when it comes to making larger scaled cloaking mechanisms.
Although Howell and Choi’s recent advancement in cloaking may bring forth potential medical benefits, the truth is, the object’s disappearance is still an optical illusion deceiving the eye from reality. “Your eyes will see strange sights, and your mind will imagine confusing things.” (Proverbs 23:33) Let us remember to keep our eyes fixed upon the truth. “But my eyes are fixed on you, Sovereign Lord; in you I take refuge” (Psalm 141:8)

Pretty wild where science and technology can go! Makes me think of the original Star Trek series, and the Romulan cloaking device — I think a lot of what was Gene Roddenberry’s SciFi became prophetic 🙂
