Elon Musk recently tweeted “Christianity has become toothless.” A rather odd but true statement coming from a non Christian. I don’t follow much of what this man says but in this day and age it is a rather true and timely remark.
Having teeth implies biting. Teeth are imperative in the act of biting. This fact kind of goes without saying but it seems necessary to state this now and try and apply it to Christianity today.
This tweet implies that Christianity has no teeth and is therefore incapable of biting. While this rings true with most contemporary feel-good prosperity gospel churches, it is wholly untrue about the true Christianity that seeks to preach the Gospel of Jesus Christ and proclaim repentance and faith to a lost and dying world.
Matthew 4:17 From that time Jesus began to preach, and to say, Repent: for the kingdom of heaven is at hand.
A Christianity that doesn’t preach repentance is one without teeth. It’s one that allows for the most vulnerable among us to be slaughtered while they sit and pander to the world. It is one that allows for people to think that remaining in their sin is loving because they aren’t supposedly hurting their feelings by letting them stay the way they are.
John 3:3 Jesus answered and said unto him, Verily, verily, I say unto thee, Except a man be born again, he cannot see the kingdom of God.
We must be born again. We are born into sin. When churches affirm people’s various sins, they are essentially saying they don’t need to be born again. That is unloving. It takes teeth to tell the unbelieving sinful world that they must repent of their sins and turn to Christ. To be born again means to put off the old self and put on Christ.
So, Musk was on point because the Christianity that is seen the most is the one that affirms sin. It’s the one that condemns people to hell by not speaking the truth in Love. This Love is the only love that can save people from hell. This Love has teeth and pierces the hearts of the wicked. If only we would stand in the streets and proclaim this perfect love and bare the teeth of Christ. Only then will the world see that Christianity does have teeth. Our God is not mocked.
Galatians 6:7-9 Be not deceived; God is not mocked: for whatsoever a man soweth, that shall he also reap. For he that soweth to his flesh shall of the flesh reap corruption; but he that soweth to the Spirit shall of the Spirit reap life everlasting. And let us not be weary in well doing: for in due season we shall reap, if we faint not.
I pray that we do not faint in this day of adversity. That we walk in the Spirit. That we will preach Christ and him crucified as Paul said. That we will proclaim the truths of God’s inerrant word to a lost and dying world.
I love this analogy, Matthew!
Great job with this article,
