It is amazing the things you can learn, about people you know, and thought you knew well, simply by listening to conversations around you. It is also amazing to realize that good, Christian men and women fall prey to the wiles of the enemy. When they begin to believe in things that the Bible speaks out against as being ungodly, we know they are not guarding their minds, or taking their thoughts captive.
‘For the weapons of our warfare are not carnal but mighty in God for pulling down strongholds, casting down arguments and every high thing that exalts itself against the knowledge of God, bringing every thought into captivity to the obedience of Christ, and being ready to punish all disobedience when your obedience is fulfilled.’ 2 Corinthians 10:4-6 (ESV)
It is disturbing that many Christians will watch movies that are tainted with filthy language, and are sometimes full of sexual scenes and innuendo. Christians will post today’s horoscope on their Facebook and Twitter pages. Sisters will read romance novels that have no hint of Christianity in them. Many video games are full of sex and violence, yet Christian brothers are purchasing and playing them, and quite often allowing their children to do the same.
Today, there is a rise in fascination with the occult. But the Bible gives guidance in dealing with spiritual demons and mediums, and their ilk. Leviticus 19:31 says, ‘Do not turn to mediums, or consult spiritists, or you will be defiled by them; I am the LORD your God.’ And in Deuteronomy 18:9-12a, Moses warned about taking on the religions and practices of other nations, sorcery, witchcraft, and more. Moses goes on to describe these things as abominations.
Believing that deceased loved ones are living in our homes, or are spiritually occupying the cemeteries they are buried in, goes completely against what the Word teaches: when we die, we stand in judgment. In judgment, we either go to heaven, or we go to hell. There is no in between, no other alternative.
The attack on Christianity is greatly aided when brothers and sisters begin to move to that side of the spectrum, or to exhibit tolerance of it. Even simple curiosity can sway a person to explore, to dabble in, to experiment with mystical ideas and methodologies that may open doors one does not want opened. Remember, even the demons know Jesus’ name. All of it is ungodly. And the cause of Christ suffers harm when Christians participate, even in very small ways, advancing acceptance of these practices and beliefs which are so at odds with the purity of spirit that should be evident in hearts that belong to Jesus. Believers must stand strong against these evil things, and follow Christ, walking their journey with Him to the good end He has for them. Ungodly beliefs bring hopelessness, while godly beliefs bring peace.
‘Those who walk uprightly enter into peace; they find rest as they lie in death.’ Isaiah 57:2 (NIV)
Have you been faced with a daunting curiosity concerning the occult, or other beliefs that have nothing to do with your Christianity? If so, what was the outcome, and how did you arrive there?
Blessings!
Lili, you are so right. Sometimes we even dabble in these contrary believes unknowingly; not paying attention to the harm it can cause our spiritual growth or those looking on our lives as examples. Lord help us to be vigilant in the things we say and do, so it may reflect You and and what You stand for. Amen.
