Bible Verses To Live By, From Philippians

Recently I have been reading from the Book of Philippians in the New Testament. What caught my attention were the number of passages that give insight for living a life of spiritual maturity. Following are eight sections of scripture that stand out, and that provide good content for study and meditation, and putting into practice in our daily living as Christians. They also make excellent memory verses.

  • Philippians 1:9-11 reads, “It is my prayer that your love may abound more and more, with knowledge and all discernment, so that you may approve what is excellent, and so be pure and blameless for the day of Christ, filled with the fruit of righteousness that comes through Jesus Christ, to the glory and praise of God.”
  • Philippians 1:27-28 says, “Let your manner of life be worthy of the gospel of Christ, so that…I may hear that you are standing firm in one spirit, with one mind striving side by side for the faith of the gospel, and not frightened in anything by your opponents.”

The rest of the following verses express ways in which one can live a life “worthy of the gospel.”

  • Philippians 2:3-4 states, “Do nothing from selfish ambition or conceit, but in humility count others more significant than yourselves. Let each of you look not only to your own interests, but also the interests of others.
  • Philippians 2:14-16 exhorts us to “do all things without grumbling or disputing, that you may be blameless and innocent, children of God in the midst of a crooked and twisted generation, among whom you shine as lights in the world, holding fast to the word of life…”
  • Philippians 3:8-9 expresses, “I count everything as loss because of the surpassing worth of knowing Christ Jesus my Lord…in order that I may gain Christ and be found in him, not having a righteousness of my own that comes from the law, but that which comes through faith in Christ, the righteousness that depends on faith…”
  • Philippians 3:20-21 says, “Our citizenship is in heaven, and from it we await a Savior, the Lord Jesus Christ, who will transform our lowly body to be like his glorious body, by the power that enables him to subject all things to himself.”
  • Philippians 4:4-7 offers these words: “Rejoice in the Lord always, again I say rejoice. Let your reasonableness be known to everyone. The Lord is at hand. Do not be anxious about anything, but by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God. And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and minds in Christ Jesus.”
  • Philippians 4:8 says, “Whatever is true, whatever is honorable, whatever is just, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is commendable, if there is any excellence, if there is anything worthy of praise, think about these things.”

Scripture memorization and meditation is very valuable for Christians to do as an exercise in spiritual discipline. Scripture can be quoted in times of temptation. It can be used in spiritual warfare to ward off the fiery darts of Satan. Jesus used scripture when he was tempted.

In this day and age in which Christians are living, we need the truths of the Bible more than ever. We can claim the promises of God’s Word for our protection, provision, peace, hope, and eternal salvation.

These passages, and others of your choosing, are a necessary part of Christian maturity and defense against the anti-God culture of our day. The habit of memorizing and meditating on Bible verses is one that every Christian would find valuable in their daily walk with God.
