Christmas. ‘Twas the season to be jolly, but I was finding myself much more contemplative than jolly. Every time I would come across a manger scene, I was somehow captivated like never before nor since. That little baby, the Son of God, seemed to be inviting me so tangibly into His realm. My mother-in-law’s church had a manger scene displayed on the platform. After the service, I was drawn to that scene and could hardly pull myself away for the Christmas festivities that were to follow. Such love seemed to flow from that plastic baby Jesus. It was mystifying. I was haunted (in a good way) by that invitation to be loved by this special child who was, at one time in history, actually alive. Really alive and offering love to all who would simply come and receive it.
A year or so earlier, God had given me a melody for which I had no words as yet. I began to realize a connection between that melody and the invitation given by all those baby Jesus’ that seemed to be illuminated like never before. Here are the results…
Come, He’s waiting with open arms
Come, He’s waiting with open arms
Come, He’s waiting with open arms for you…
He is here. He is love. Waiting, reaching, calling you…
Come as you are on this holy night
And see the sweet babe in His glorious light
This one in the manger is a King in disguise
Bringing freedom and peace to all who’ll be wise
Cradle Him in your arms tonight
Receive God’s great gift, receive with joy and delight
The wise ones of old sought determined to know
This king who lived to die – eternal life to bestow
King Jesus lived to die to give life to all mankind
Love. Great, great, indescribable love awaits all who will reach out and take what the baby in the manger – now a might King – has to offer. It is a choice, my friend. It is for anyone who wants it. No one is exempt. No one is too far gone to be acceptable. Jesus came to give gifts to mankind – eternal life, salvation, His Holy Spirit to name only three of so many more. Don’t hesitate. Come, just as you are; it will be the best decision you ever made.
