If you are like me, when I hear stories of heroic deeds or think about various scary situations, I try to decide how I should respond and how I might actually respond. Would I be the one to stand boldly to confess my love for Jesus at gun point? Could I resolutely confront an assailant with the name of Jesus seeing him back away in confusion? Would I fold in fear and renounce my Savior facing a guillotine? As I contemplated the myriad of possible scenarios, I realized that I will never know the answer to my question. Individuals who find themselves facing unimaginable situations are given the grace they need at that moment. Mark 13:11 gives us some insight on this:
But when they shall lead you, and deliver you up, take no thought beforehand what ye shall speak, neither do ye premeditate: but whatsoever shall be given you in that hour, that speak ye: for it is not ye that speak, but the Holy Ghost.
This verse specifically focuses on speaking, but I believe it applies to any situation where we need God to bring us through a challenge that is way beyond our ability to navigate successfully. God’s grace will be there when we need it.
Then the Holy Spirit gave me a deeper understanding: God’s grace arrives perfectly timed to the occasion of its need–every time.
Jesus said in John 14:1, “Let not your heart be troubled: you believe in God, believe also in Me”. In trusting, there is rest. In rest, there is peace. As we dwell in the peace of God, we are strategically aligned with God’s purposes. We need not waste time and mental energy creating scenarios that may never occur. We do best live in the present and enjoy the fellowship of our triune God. We trust that He is able to keep us and bring us through to His glory in whatever situation we find ourselves So take heart and trust that whatever God allows in your path, He will provide the necessary grace to respond according to His will at that moment.
When are you most inclined to worry and stew about scenarios that waste your time and energy? Have you thought about the fact that Jesus is in total control and will meet you, bringing His grace, at the exact time you need it? Choose rest and peace. He is trustworthy.
