How can a Christian get through to an overprotective, stubborn, I don’t need God type of a person?
One issue near to my heart is encouraging others to seek the truth. I don’t intend to encourage people to seek “a” truth, but instead The Living Truth. So often though, people have created an a la carte faith system and they themselves don’t really know how to tell me what they believe. Then there are times I run into atheists which aren’t too bad unless you happen to meet a New Atheist. The New Atheist is quite a challenge to just talk about the weather with.
So, how can a Christian get through to this kind of individual? I am faced with this question almost daily as I’m sure you are as well. Jesus says to share the good news. How can we reach people who don’t want to be touched by the great love that God has for them?
As Christians, we can’t overcome these character traits by ourselves. We need the Lord’s help just like these people need to feel the power of God’s love. Love is the answer but the lost don’t always see it like we do.
“But how can they call on him to save them unless they believe in him? And how can they believe in him if they have never heard about him? And how can they hear about him unless someone tells them? “(Romans 10:14, NLT)
So many lost people are distant and resistant to God and His children because of the absence of love in their lives. Satan has created so many problems in our lives that unbelievers think sin and the problem of evil are because God isn’t good or real enough. The biggest struggle Christians face in evangelizing is explaining faith in Jesus to the unbeliever. To get them to see the goodness of God and the love that He has for us is a difficult task. We must remember we are not alone in evangelizing because the Holy Spirit is the one that can soften the hearts and minds of the unbeliever.
“For though we walk in the flesh, we are not waging war according to the flesh. For the weapons of our warfare are not of the flesh but have divine power to destroy strongholds. We destroy arguments and every lofty opinion raised against the knowledge of God, and take every thought captive to obey Christ.” (2 Corinthians 10:3-5, ESV)
There may be a struggle in getting people to see what you see, but take heart and ask God to guide you. While you may not see people come into Christianity that instant based on your words, keep praying for your words to be planted into their life so that one day they too may see the sweetness of Jesus Christ our Savior.
How do you struggle as you spread the good news?
