A recent Barna Poll revealed that less than half of people who identify as Christians believe in the trinity (See link below). So, I asked the question, what do these so-called Christians believe? If Jesus is not God, then He is less than God, and the Holy Spirit is not a person, but a force or power.
The focus of this article, however, will be on Jesus being equal with God, not a creation of God or only a prophet. While it is true that the word, “trinity” is not mentioned in the Bible, neither is the concept of Jesus being less than God. In John 10:30 Jesus declares that “I and the Father are one,”
One cannot be a believer in Jesus as the means of salvation with the belief that He is a mere mortal being like the rest of us. There would be no sacrifice on the cross for our sins, and no resurrection, the whole basis of the Christian faith. If Jesus is not God there is no hope for any of us. We are born with no purpose for living, just existing, then dying. Jesus is not the Savior for humanity. We might as well do away with Christianity in total.
Furthermore, if Jesus is said to not be God, He is made a liar and deceiver because of the many claims He made like, “I am the way, the truth, and the life”, “I am the living water”, “I am the bread of life”, “I am the light of the world”, and the most important claim of all, ‘I am the resurrection and the life, he who believes in me, even though he dies, yet shall he live.” All these things Jesus said about Himself can be found by reading through the Gospel of John. If these were not true, the disciples of his time would have refuted them.
Jesus proved He was God by the many occasions recorded in the Gospels. How does one account for His miracles, healings, the feeding of the five thousand with five loaves and two fish, walking on water, and many other things, if He was a mere mortal?
Best of all, how does one explain the transfiguration recorded in Matthew 17:1-8, Mark 9:2-8, and Luke 9:28-36, when Jesus revealed His glorified body to three of His disciples? How does one explain His glorified body after His resurrection when He could just appear without entering through a locked door (John 20:26)?
It is not possible to humanly explain the trinity or make any sense of it. It has to be accepted by faith based upon what the Bible says. If we could figure it out, we would all be like God!
Acts 4:12 “There is salvation in no other name given among men under heaven by which we must be saved.”
1 Timothy 2:5 “There is one God, and there is one mediator between God and humanity, the man Christ Jesus.” To be a mediator one must see both sides of an issue. Well, Jesus is both sides of this issue. Jesus took our sin on our behalf on the cross so that “in him we might become the righteousness of God”(2 Corinthians 5:21).
Very good, John. If Jesus is not God, we have no hope. So much evidence in the Bible that Jesus is God. Hard to cover it all in a short article. Keep up the good work.
AMEN
