Looking At The World Through A Biblical Lens

Your worldview, whether you know it or not, is how you as an individual perceive the world around you. Your worldview is interested in these 4 aspects of your life: Origin, meaning, morality and destiny. I’m going to look at just one today, meaning. Where do you get your life’s meaning from? The Christian would answer God, through his perfect word. This divinely inspired, God breathed word is sufficient to answer all of life’s questions.

For the Christian there is only one worldview, the biblical worldview. If someone claims to be a Christian and does not look at the world through a biblical lens, then they fall short of being a Christian. If you have no solid worldview, you’ll be tossed “to and fro” by every wave of teaching that comes your way.

Charles Spurgeon once said, “A mindless Christianity is a spineless Christianity.” The mind and the heart need to be interconnected in order to maintain a solid biblical worldview.

Paul exhorts us –Romans 12:1-2  — I beseech you therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God, that ye present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable unto God, which is your reasonable service. And be not conformed to this world: but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind, that ye may prove what is that good, and acceptable, and perfect, will of God.

Romans 12:1 and 2 are a couple of verses that explain and compliment the idea of having and cultivating a biblical worldview. Although God is working in the Christian changing his heart and mind, we have a role to play in this. We should be diligent in studying and understanding God’s word for all of our Christian lives. Full stop. We don’t just pray for a hole then lean on the shovel. We pray for God to help us dig a hole then get to work doing the job.

This verse in Paul’s letter to the people of Phillipi sums it up well.

Philippians 2:12 Wherefore, my beloved, as ye have always obeyed, not as in my presence only, but now much more in my absence, work out your own salvation with fear and trembling.

Matthew Henry stated the following in his commentary:

Observe, it concerns us above all things to secure the welfare of our souls: whatever becomes of other things, let us take care of our best interests. It is our own salvation, the salvation of our own souls.

So, one sign of a born-again believer is that he looks to God’s word to cultivate in himself a biblical worldview in order to further his sanctification. This furthering of his own sanctification will inevitably foster a love for others. Walking with others in their walk. Shepherding his own family. Evangelizing the people around him and so on. Looking at this world through a biblical lens will not only aid us in our salvation but enable us to better fulfill the great commission of making disciples.

Those beautiful words that make up the 66 books of the Bible are all that a Christian needs to live his or her life in a God honoring and God glorifying way.
