While speaking to my neighbor about her late husband I was surprised at her saying, “I hope I don’t live into my nineties, that’s enough of living already!” She is a kidder and so I thought she was joking, as she quite often does. She was being extremely candid about her feelings. The conversation went to God. Her late father was a Pastor of small church, and although a believer, she very seldom read the Bible as a child, or ostensibly as an adult. She said, “When I get to Heaven if it’s real, I wonder if I’ll know anyone?”
With that comment the conversation got revved up. I said, “you’ll know your loved ones when you get there.” And she then replied, “Oh no! There are so many people I don’t want to see anymore!” That response got me laughing so hard! I just never expected this little kind tiny frail 89-year-old to come back with that kind of comment!
Well, suffice to say, our little encounter was quite an interesting one. In those twenty minutes, I learned more about my dear little elderly neighbor than I had in the nine years she moved here. But one thing I was grateful for from this interaction – was that she reaffirmed her belief in Jesus Christ as her LORD and Savior. She had gotten “dusty” as she termed it – and wanted to get reacquainted with Jesus. And wondered if He left her when she stopped praying. She even went so far as to say, “I wonder if the enemy robbed me from God because I’ve been so lax in praying for quite some time.”
The LORD gave me a verse almost immediately when she uttered those words. I heard in my head so clearly scripture from John 10:29 – “My Father, which gave them Me, is greater than all; and no man is able to pluck them out of my Father’s hand.”
I assured her of His Divine and unbreakable promises throughout the Bible. She was smiling as she listened and said, “You sound just like my beloved father!” I took it as a compliment and felt blessed!
Divine Assurance: The Unshakeable Promise
John 10:29 offers a profound assurance of the LORD’s protection and Sovereignty. This passage speaks to our hearts, knowing that He is Omnipotent. And we have full-blown and loving security that comes from being under His constant care.
Scriptural Support
The theme of God’s unassailable strength and the safety it provides to believers is echoed throughout the scriptures. In Isaiah 41:10, we are comforted with the words, “Fear thou not; for I am with thee: be not dismayed; for I am thy God: I will strengthen thee; yea, I will help thee; yea, I will uphold thee with the right hand of my righteousness.” Similarly, Romans 8:38-39 assures us that nothing can separate us from the love of God, which is in Christ Jesus our Lord.
Reflection
The moral takeaway from these verses is the call to trust in God’s power and promise. It encourages believers to live without fear, knowing that their lives are held securely in the hands of a loving and mighty God. We are able to live life in the way we are called to live, which is honorably, and observing His commandments and laws – while aligning ourselves in the Word on a daily basis.
- How does the assurance of God’s protection influence the way we face challenges in life?
- In what ways can we cultivate a deeper trust in God’s promises?
“Dear Heavenly Father, we are grateful for Your promises of protection and care. Help us to trust in Your strength and to rest in the security of Your hand. May our lives reflect the peace that comes from knowing You are greater than all. In Jesus’ name, Amen.”
