Do you ever think about dying? Most of us have thought about our own death or the death of someone close to us. And for those of us who have experienced the loss of someone close, days following our loss can make us feel as if the sun should not be shining, holidays should not appear on the calendar; as though the void will never lessen—life and schedule should somehow cease. Do you know that God thinks about our death? What He has to say is found throughout His Word to us:
“Precious (important and no light matter) in the sight of the Lord is the death of His saints (His loving ones)” (Psalm 116:15).
“Say to them, ‘As surely as I live, declares the Sovereign Lord, I take no pleasure in the death of the wicked, but rather that they turn from their ways and live. Turn! Turn from your evil ways! Why will you die, people of Israel?’ “ (Ezekiel 33:11)
Both the wicked and the saints will face an earthly death. Whether we have committed our life to God through Christ, or chosen to live our own way and reject God’s provision, He knows how many days we will spend on this earth and He considers our death.
The time to consider our mortality is while we live! The idea of death should not prevail in our thoughts or change how we live our lives by causing us to be “scared to death of death.” But how do we avoid this fear? The truth is that we can only avoid fear of death—the unknown—by trusting Christ and believing on Him for our salvation from sin. Assurance in Christ will bring peace and trust.
“Since the children are made of flesh and blood, it’s logical that the Savior took on flesh and blood in order to rescue them by his death. By embracing death, taking it into himself, he destroyed the Devil’s hold on death and freed all who cower through life, scared to death of death” (Hebrews 2:15).
Apprehension about death is a normal part of this life, and grief is a process we all go through with the loss of a loved one. Still, Jesus has conquered death and the grave for us. We need only trust in Him and know that our days are in His loving Hands.
Do you believe what God’s Word says about death and eternity? What can you do to move closer to the Lord and receive His peace concerning death?
