Standing On The Rock Of Hope And Security

I recently heard a story on television about a bird of prey that dove down to the water to catch a fish. After several attempts, the bird ended up floundering in the water. It managed to make it to a rock waiting, as the speaker said, to “dry off.” Soon after, it flew away soaring upwards into the sky.

There can be several applications to this story that apply to life. Maybe you are a religious person, but your faith doesn’t seem to work for you. You have doubts about your salvation. You question your beliefs. There is not any relevancy to life.

Perhaps you are going through some very trying circumstances with no end in sight. You are getting depressed, doing all that you can to bring about positive change, only to be floundering in despair.

Are you involved in a destructive habit or addiction that is destroying your relationships? Your life is going downhill fast!

In each of these scenarios, if you are a Christian you may be wondering where God is. If you do not believe in God, perhaps you need to call on him for the very first time.

However, whatever your case might be, you are like the bird floundering in the sea of uncertainty, engulfed by the waves of hopelessness. Maybe the words of Psalm 69:1-2 have become your own. “Save me, O God, for the waters have come up to my neck. I sink in deep mire, where there is no foothold; I have come into deep waters, and the flood sweeps over me.” If so, you can hold on to the following verses: Psalm 72:12-13 says, “For God delivers the needy when he calls, the poor and him who has no helper. He has pity on the weak and the needy, and saves the lives of the needy.”  Psalm 25:16-18 adds, “Turn to me and be gracious to me, for I am lonely and afflicted. The troubles of my heart are enlarged; bring me out of my distresses. Consider my affliction and my trouble, and forgive all my sins.”

When God responds to your helpless situation you can say, “I waited patiently for the Lord; he inclined to me and heard my cry. He drew me up from the pit of destruction, out of the miry bog, and set my feet upon a rock, making my steps secure”(Psalm 40:1-2). Just as the bird was floundering in the water but found refuge on the rock, God can plant your feet upon the solid Rock of Hope and Security. “Trust in the Lord forever, for the Lord God is an everlasting rock”(Isaiah 26:4). “For God alone, O my soul, wait in silence, for my hope is from him. He only is my rock and my salvation, my fortress; I shall not be shaken. On God rests my salvation and my glory; my mighty rock, my refuge is God”(Psalm 62:5-7). As you wait, seek God’s wisdom and strength.

Isaiah 40:31 says, “They who wait upon the Lord shall renew their strength; they shall mount up with wings like eagles; they shall run and not be weary, they shall walk and not faint.” The wings of eagles are very powerful, making it possible to soar to great altitudes at tremendous speeds. God can give you the strength to overcome or carry you through in whatever circumstances you find yourself.  Make him your Savior!
