Recently, I saw a video of a pastor telling what I assume was a true story, about a group of people having a tour of an art museum. There was a picture of Satan and a man playing chess. The man had a look of despondency while Satan had a look of victory. He figured he had put the man in checkmate! In that tour group there happened to be a world champion chess player who stayed there looking at the picture while the rest of the tour group went on ahead. When the tour guide asked him what he was doing, the man responded, “I am a world champion chess player and see things on a chessboard that others do not. I have been looking at this game and have observed that the king still has one more move.”
The world right now is like a big game of chess. It is a battle between good and evil, a battle for world domination, and between spiritual darkness and light. There are many world leaders who want to have the upper hand in determining world events. The key players are in position. However, God controls the “chessboard of humanity.” He sees things that humans don’t. He is all-knowing. In fact, God already knew before the game even started who the key players would be and the moves they would make, and “The Lord brings the counsel of the nations to nothing; he frustrates the plans of the people”(Psalm 33:10). Psalm 2:2 says, “The kings of the earth set themselves, and the rulers take counsel together, against the Lord and his anointed,” but “He who sits in the heavens laughs; the Lord holds them in derision”(2:4). And he “removes kings and sets up kings”(Daniel 2:21).
During the soon coming Tribulation Period, “The kings of the earth and the great ones and the generals and the rich and the powerful, and everyone, slave and free, hid themselves in the caves and among the rocks of the mountains, calling to the mountains and rocks, ‘Fall on us and hide us from the face of him who sits on the throne, and from the wrath of the Lamb, for the great day of their wrath has come, and who can stand’”(Revelation 6:15-17).
God, The King, will have the final move, and will put Satan in checkmate. Not only that, but God will throw the devil “into the lake of fire and sulfur…and will be tormented day and night forever and ever” (Rev. 20:10).
The big question is, which side of this spiritual game of chess are you on? If you are on the side of Satan, the game is over, and you lose! If you are on God’s side, and part of His Kingdom, you will live forever in His Presence. Can you say, “Yet God my King is from of old, working salvation in the midst of the earth?” It’s your move!
John,
I really loved this piece. That story was fascinating about the art and the “chess master” seeing that work of art differently from the rest of the “passers-by) – And love your analogy of “one more move – the King’s final move!
Excellent job – thank you for this great message.
I’m sharing with others!
God Bless~
