The Future Of Damascus, Syria

Damascus, Syria, is considered to be the oldest continuously inhabited city in the world, founded in the 3rd century B.C. Excavations give evidence that it was inhabited as far back as 2500 B.C. It now has a population of over 2,500,00 people.

This city has biblical significance, both in the past and present. It was on the road to Damascus where the Apostle Paul was converted to the Christian faith, after spending many years persecuting Christians. This is recorded in Acts 9:3-16“Now as he went on his way, he approached Damascus, and suddenly a light from heaven shone around him.” He heard the voice of the Lord, but went blind. There was a disciple in Damascus named Ananias who was told in a vision to go to the Street called Straight, and lay his hands on Paul so he could regain his sight. God said to Ananias, “Go, for he is a chosen instrument of mine to carry my name before the Gentiles…” (The Street called Straight still exists today. It is part of the old Roman Road that runs east and west through the city).

Now, in our current events, Damascus is in the news. It is part of biblical prophecy pertaining to the Middle East conflict. One by one, some of the key players in the Middle East are being taken out of the picture, like Assad, who fled to Russia. Syria has fallen and with that, Russia’s stronghold in the area has been weakened, and the balance of power has changed. Iran has been weakened. By God’s divine providence and with the might of the Israel Defense Force, Israel is more and more gaining the upper hand in the Middle East. The IDF has destroyed most of Assad’s military bases and Navy fields, including surface-to-air missile sites and ships.

How this all plays out remains to be seen. However, one thing for sure is that at some time in the not-to-distant future, Damascus will be destroyed. Why can that be said with so much certainty? The answer is found in a prophecy given in Isaiah 17-1-3“Behold, Damascus will cease to be a city and will become a heap of ruins…The fortress will disappear from Ephraim and the kingdom from Damascus…”  Of course, it can’t be known at this time why, when, or how, this will happen, but it will happen, because Holy Spirit inspired Bible prophecy says it will, and it is never wrong! This is a significant piece of End Times prophecy.

It is an exciting time in history for all true Christians who have accepted Jesus as their Savior, to see God intervene in the affairs of the world. He has a divine agenda for humanity, and it is God’s desire that all people be saved and come to a knowledge of the truth. You can be part of God’s plan of eternal salvation, if you are not already. The way world events are being fulfilled exactly as End Times prophecies says they will be, and converging, means that God’s judgment of humanity is very near, but so is the calling up of all believers into his eternal presence.

Will you be part of that? I hope and pray you will be.
