Jesus says the Harvest is ready!! That means that we don’t need to wait to spread the good news of the Gospel. We don’t need to wait any longer because growing season is done and now as God’s children it’s time to get out into the field. The Scriptures say it perfectly, “The work is plentiful but the workers are few.” But why is that? With so many people wanting a job why would there be only but a few workers?
“And he said to them, “The harvest is plentiful, but the laborers are few. Therefore pray earnestly to the Lord of the harvest to send out laborers into his harvest.” Luke 10:2 (ESV)
“Now the parable is this: The seed is the word of God.” Luke 8:11 (ESV)
“Do you not say, ‘There are yet four months, then comes the harvest’? Look, I tell you, lift up your eyes, and see that the fields are white for harvest.”
John 4:35 (ESV)
When we consider the time that the Gospels were written, we get a better understanding of why Jesus felt the need to remind us of these things. These workers, who were not standing on a solid foundation, thought from their previous experience with planting and reaping, that what they were planting wouldn’t amount to much as the enemy stepped in to remind them of what they could get for themselves.
How often have we thought this about our own lives? Here Jesus points out that the harvest is ready and the people are shocked. God took His seed which was His Word, His truth, and planted it. The harvest came but the people’s idea of what they should be seeing didn’t line up with what they actually saw, mainly because Jesus wasn’t talking about the actual harvest fields, instead He was talking about people’s souls. People’s souls are ready to receive the Good News.
What is the point of these Scriptures? The point is that the Harvest is ready right now, right where you are. It doesn’t matter if you think you are ready or not. God has called on you to help with the Harvest because there will come a time when Jesus will return and the work of the harvest will be finished. You have been called on, set apart, chosen, adopted, and loved. The end of the harvest means it’s time to go to our forever home in Heaven. I, for one, do not want to let another day pass by without working for my Heavenly Father just because I don’t feel like it looks or feels right. The hard part is, if you are waiting for that feeling, it will never come until it’s too late.
You were chosen to be apart of this harvest because you are God’s child. You play an important role that no one else can do.
You may feel like you aren’t ready and that is okay because you are in good company. Do you think Jesus’ disciples were ready? Do you think Paul was ready or even Jesus’ Mom, Mary? They weren’t ready but God gave them provision and qualified them for what needed to be done according to HIS will.
Who will you speak to today about the Good News? Will you go out into the harvest?
