There are some amazing resources out there to help us understand men, women, and relationships. However, what has been most helpful for me, to really grasp the intention of God’s heart for relationships (and ultimately, marriage), is The Ultimate Life Guide–that is the Holy Bible. It is here that we begin to understand the foundation, and embrace the differences of human creation. We can also see the intention of relationships through God’s Divine matchmaking abilities. Let’s rewind to the beginning and take a look at the creation of Adam and Eve:
First we should take note that God created Adam out of dust. (Genesis 2:7) Eve, however was created FOR Adam as we can see in Genesis 2:18: “It is not good for the man to be alone. I shall create a suitable helper for him.” She was also created FROM Adam as described in Genesis 2:20-22: “So the Lord God caused the man to fall into a deep sleep; and while he was sleeping, he took one of the man’s ribs and then closed up the place with flesh. Then the Lord God made a woman from the rib he had taken out of the man, and he brought her to the man.”
Isn’t it interesting that God didn’t create the two in the same way?
Embracing the fact that Adam and Eve were created differently may disrupt our worldview that men and women were created equal; but understanding God’s intention behind the creation of the first man and woman opens us up to a greater and deeper understanding of our roles and responsibilities. It assists in our spiritual maturity and growth in the love department.
Throughout Scripture we can see God’s beautiful love story unfold. Therefore, as men and women, we need to trust that God is the Ultimate Matchmaker and surrender our hearts to His perfect plan and timing.
Men, do you trust that God loves you so much that He made (prepared, fashioned, appointed) a suitable helper for you?
Women, will you accept that God is developing you into the suitable helper for your (future) spouse? Will you trust that, in His perfect timing, God will place you in the path of your “Adam”?
Whether you’re like me and walking through the season of singleness, or you’re in a relationship and trying to navigate how to effectively do it God’s way, for His glory, I believe we can all turn to the Word of God and learn everything we need about relationships. After all, He is the Author of Love and the Creator of marriage!
What season are you in? How are you glorifying God in the midst of it?
Heather,
What a great article. I really liked the point you made about God creating men and women differently from the very beginning. I think it’s so important for men and women to realize that there are some very unique differences, but at the same time it’s all meant to compliment a relationship that also includes our Lord. Thanks so much for sharing. God bless.
