Micah 6:8 He hath shewed thee, O man, what is good: and what doth the LORD require of thee, but to do justly, and to love mercy, and to walk humbly with thy God?
In every aspect of our behavior the Scripture makes clear how we are to act: to humbly give due acknowledgement to God. Humility knows who God is and who we are before Him. The question that I lay before each of us is, “What does the LORD our God require of us, before anything else?”
We may search about in our minds for thoughts of other things which delights us more and we think would surely please God. But regardless of whatever else we may conjure up, all that He requires of us is that we walk humbly before Him.
1 Corinthians 10:31 Whether therefore ye eat, or drink, or whatsoever ye do, do all to the glory of God.
The chief end of all believers is the glory of God. We were made for this purpose, redeemed for this purpose, and purchased to be his own special people for this very purpose. The greatest means of our glorifying God, is by walking humbly with Him.
We may imagine that God is glorified by great works that we can do in His name, amazing and dazzling the eyes of a watching world and producing much fruit that will bring great blessing to others. And our Savior certainly did say that from our good works people would give glory to God, “In the same way, let your light shine before others, so that they may see your good works and give glory to your Father who is in heaven.” (Matthew 5:16).
However, only when we behave according to the rule of walking humbly with our God, will our LORD be glorified and we will bear fruit that will last. What we desire is good works that come from walking humbly with God. Good works that will last because we have not relied upon ourselves, but upon our Savior, whom we abide in. Remember Jesus’ clear command ‘apart from me you can nothing’. Sure, we may bear fruit, but if we have not brought forth fruit from a humble heart, our fruit is as ‘nothing’ before the Father. Sobering thought isn’t it?
Proverbs 3:6 In all thy ways acknowledge him, and he shall direct thy paths.
To walk humbly with our God, our heart needs to submit to Him and we need to acknowledge His rule and authority over every situation in our lives. With this abased approach, whereby we are ready to surrender to whatever He asks (or doesn’t ask) of us, our footsteps will be guided by Him and we will bear sweet, lasting fruit for His glory alone. What could be better than this?
Notice that Proverbs 3:6 says, ‘in all your ways’. We must humbly submit everything to Christ. No issue is to be withheld from Him. We are not to be wise in our own eyes thinking that we can work the outcome in a particular situation out in a more favorable way than God. All our choices and decisions ought to be made with a fearful and reverent referral to God and this approach will surely lead to God’s blessing and guidance. Walking humbly with our God means not overthinking a situation, but rather putting it to rest in our minds by trusting that God will work out the answers according to His good will and purposes. We humbly choose to let God be God in our situation, rather than us arrogantly attempting to do His job for Him.
James 4:10 Humble yourselves in the sight of the LORD and He will lift you up.
There may be abounding opportunities in your life right now to bear good fruit. But is it fruit borne from a humble heart? Let’s remember that the first thing God requires of us is not fruit, but a humble heart (Isaiah 66:2). Then will come the fruit that He guides us to produce – fruit that will last and glorify our God.
“Heavenly Father, I long to worship You with a spirit of humility. But I am weak and I need the help of your Spirit. Forgive me for arrogance and pride. For thinking I can do great things in Your Name, without your grace and without your guidance. Teach me to walk humbly with You so that I may glorify you in all that You lead me to do. Thank You in Jesus glorious Name.”
Amen!
