Lay not up for yourselves treasures upon earth, where moth and rust doth corrupt, and where thieves break through and steal: But lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust doth corrupt, and where thieves do not break through nor steal: For where your treasure is, there will your heart be also. (Matthew 6:19-21)
By pouring out our devotion to God and setting our minds on the Spirit, it creates a nice nest egg, (so to speak), for when we enter our eternal home. (Romans 8:6) I know I wouldn’t want my treasures to be stored on this earthly plain where it will eventually be eaten away by the forces of time. Why store up such temporary things which, once our time on earth is done, we will no longer possess?
So often Christians expect the world from God, believing that anything they ask for will be granted them. It takes remarkable faith to propose such a notion, and though it’s true that God can give us whatever we desire, many Christians forget that He will give us things according to His will, not our own.
And this is the confidence that we have in him, that, if we ask any thing according to his will, he heareth us: And if we know that he hear us, whatsoever we ask, we know that we have the petitions that we desired of him. 1 John 5:14-15
*Note, in the above scripture it says anything we ask will be known to God, He will have a petition of our desire, in other words, He will hear our desires. The most remarkable thing we can do to exercise our faith muscles is to truly believe that God can do anything for us, yet be willing to accept that God will not give such things to us if it isn’t according to His will.
You see, God has already given us enough, He allowed His own Son to be sacrificed so we can live forever. Through belief in Christ we can now live eternally–what more do you want!? Do you honestly believe that God owes you anything more? The temporal pleasures of this world are nothing, and will be nothing but crumbled dust over time. Why be so focused on such temporal things when God has laid out eternity for you?
While we look not at the things which are seen, but at the things which are not seen: for the things which are seen are temporal; but the things which are not seen are eternal.” 2 Corinthians 4:18.
Focus on eternal things, such as what is in your heart, the unseen Spring of Living Water within you that is Christ, and pass this great commission on to others who can continue to pass this on from generation to generation all the way to the end of time, because you know Christ and truly believe that what He did for you is far grander than anything the world has to offer.
The treasures we store should be defined by the fruits of the Spirit within. Our focus should be on the fruits of the Spirit that can only be measured in our hearts and in the way we share our faith with others.
But as it is written, Eye hath not seen, nor ear heard, neither have entered into the heart of man, the things (treasures) which God hath prepared for them that love him. 1 Corinthians 2:9
Where do your treasures lie?
