Work is something all Christians are called to do. Since the beginning man was called by God to keep the garden He created.
Gen 2:15 And the LORD God took the man, and put him into the garden of Eden to dress it and to keep it.
This is a quote from the Matthew Henry concise commentary on this particular verse.
“We were none of us sent into the world to be idle. He that made us these souls and bodies has given us something to work with; and he that gave us this earth for our habitation has made us something to work on.
We were made to work, be productive and prosper. These are all good things if we do them in a discerning manner. If we neglect our work and turn to the ease of idleness we fall into a trap the devil loves to keep us in. And sometimes it doesn’t take much to get lured into a downward spiral of idleness, especially in this day and age.
The Bible warns us many times of idleness. The sin of sloth or slothfulness is a big one that can easily lay hold of a person and destroy them if they’re not intentional in trying to avoid it.
Ecc 10:18 By much slothfulness the building decayeth; and through idleness of the hands the house droppeth through.
This is not to say one can’t be idle for a short time. When idleness takes precedence over the work you need to do it becomes sin. For some staying busy and productive is relatively easy. For others it can be a daily struggle. Having some sort of schedule can help out the one struggling. Likewise the one who has no problems finding things to do can let that take over their lives to the neglect of their loved ones. This is where balance is necessary. Discerning where a person is in their lives in regards to workload and down time is crucial to avoid sin.
Much prayer should be at the forefront for one combatting this particular sin. It will likely take time to turn your patterns around but it is a needed fight to get back on the right track. The work we do everyday is important. Important to our families and our overall well being.
It also takes work to stay in the word. For some it comes easier but others have many other tasks they think they need to take care of before they can open their Bibles. This is faulty thinking at best. That path is doomed for disaster. We have to make our bible reading and prayer time the main focus of our day. And this is not just a plain reading of the bible but studying a passage so we better understand it. Praying for the Holy Spirit to enlighten us to the truths in God’s perfect word should be of first importance to every believer for it is a well that will never run dry, a spring that always flows.
Isa 58:11 And the LORD shall guide thee continually, and satisfy thy soul in drought, and make fat thy bones: and thou shalt be like a watered garden, and like a spring of water, whose waters fail not.
Amen!
God Bless you Matthew~
