Godly Parenting In Perilous Times

Parenting in this day and age is difficult. I know this is something that is said in every generation and it is probably true for the time period. These days we see a rise in the celebration of sin and degradation of our society. People’s moral fabric is being sewn to the narcissistic ideals being sprayed from the mouths of so-called influential people. Professional athletes, popular singers and social media influencers are telling people what they want to hear so they can gain an audience. And make no mistake people ruled by Satan, without a saving relationship with Christ, only want to hear the things that tickle their ears, that make them feel good.

2 Timothy 4:3-4 For the time will come when they will not endure sound doctrine; but after their own lusts shall they heap to themselves teachers, having itching ears; And they shall turn away their ears from the truth, and shall be turned unto fables.

This is a concern for Christian parents. Your children are still slaves to sin until God does a mighty work in them. So, this is a real and present concern that needs the attention of every Christian parent and every man behind the pulpit.

These verses from 2 Timothy and the rest of the epistle really highlight this concern and the remedy. This is the remedy found in previous verses.

2 Timothy 4:1-2 I charge thee therefore before God, and the Lord Jesus Christ, who shall judge the quick and the dead at his appearing and his kingdom; Preach the word; be instant in season, out of season; reprove, rebuke, exhort with all longsuffering and doctrine.

The charge here is to leaders to preach the word. What word you might ask? Christ! Preach Christ and him crucified. All the time.

In a real sense this is a charge to Christian parents as well. As men we are leaders in our homes. Our wives are helpmates in this regard. When both of the parents are in Christ and working towards the same the task is much easier. That’s not to say it won’t be difficult, but when you have a partner that you can rely on, and you both look at everything through a biblical lens, you’ll be better equipped to handle the trying situations that arise. And living in a fallen world with broken people they will come.

1 Peter 1:14 As obedient children, not fashioning yourselves according to the former lusts in your ignorance:

When we were children, we were ignorant to the things of God. If you are in Christ, obedience to God’s word should reign supreme in your hearts and household. Let’s train our children up in the fear and admonition of the Lord so that they will be better equipped to handle the devilish things that will come their way.
