Is there really one right answer to the question, “What happens when we die?”
TNT is bringing a new drama, Proof, to television this June. It seeks to answer this very question. Produced by Kyra Sedgwick, the drama is based on the life of a successful surgeon played by actress Jennifer Beals. Beals seeks to find the answer to the question of life after death by investigating stories of reincarnation, resurrections, and even out-of-body experiences. But the question never gets answered. In the end, it’s the audience’s decision to make.
While an audience-friendly television drama can bring an element of fun to the viewer, such a question as, “Is there life after death?” should bring serious consideration–since the answer has eternal consequences!
If you were searching for the answer to such an important question as eternity, where would you look?
Would you consider the best-selling book of all time? With over five billion copies printed in 349 languages, many believe that the Bible is truth, and holds the answers to the mysteries of life—including the answer to the question of life after death. With over 99 verses on eternal life, and more than 100 verses on Heaven, both the Old and New Testaments point us to answers we can trust:
- Ecclesiastes 12:7 says, “The dust returns to the ground it came from, and the spirit to God who gave it.” This Old Testament verse tells us that our body will see death, but our spirit (inner being) will never die. We all know that death is an absolute truth!
- Hebrews 9:27 explains, “Everyone has to die once, and then face the consequences. Christ’s death was also a one-time event, but it was a sacrifice that took care of sins forever. And so, when he next appears, the outcome for those eager to greet Him is, precisely, salvation.” This New Testament verse makes it plain, whether we find it appealing or not, that the day will come for each of us when we will stand before our Creator and give an account of our life on earth. The sacrifice for sin has been made by our Lord, but it is our choice whether we will receive salvation… or reject the gift.
Belief in absolute truth is offensive to many today. The idea of one way to God and salvation is rejected. It would be interesting to hear all the opinions being formed by the new series Proof. But hopefully, those who are truly searching will find their way to the truth!
