Have you taken the plunge yet? The Polar Plunge has jumped state lines from its origin of Tarkio, Missouri into Northern Iowa and beyond.
The initial campaign began when Landon Shaw, a 6-month old baby boy from Tarkio, Missouri was diagnosed with a rare form of cancer that affects the kidneys, liver, lungs, and brain. (Globegazette.com)
Neighbors of Landon’s parents (Brandon and Alyssa Shaw), came up with the fundraising campaign that challenges potential donors to take the “Polar Plunge” (jumping into cold water), video tape the plunge and challenge three additional people to do the same or pay $100 within a 24 hour time frame from the challenge. (Globegazette.com)
The whole concept has gone viral as people across the globe are accepting the challenge and putting on their best faces while jumping, swimming, or running (sometimes off the dock) into the icy cold water all for one specific purpose-a tiny baby with a life-threatening illness.
Not everyone decides to accept the challenge of the icy deep, but instead, they choose to contribute in a monetary way to the cause. Contributions may be sent to :
