“I now present to you the graduating class of 2014.” Yes, it is that time of year when caps and gowns will be worn and tears of sadness, joy, and excitement will be shed. However, this year has a slight twist for one high school senior. Desi, a Michigan teenager, will be crossing the stage to receive her high school diploma while at the same time her service dog, Walton, a 6-year-old golden retriever, will be walking right along side her.
This loyal service dog has been the constant companion for Desi serving her on a 24/7 basis over the past four years. Therefore, “it seemed like a no-brainer that Walton should also join the graduating senior for the ceremony next month.”
Walton goes to school with Desi, picks up items if they are dropped or if Desi needs them. He even helps her pay for things at the store by taking her wallet over to the cashier when Desi is running errands. (Huffintonpost.com)
Not only does Walton help on a daily basis to improve Desi’s quality of life, “’He is going to walk with her during graduation…We thought it would be appropriate for him to wear a cap and gown.’” Stated Desi’s mother in a phone call interview with the Huffington Post. (Huffingtonpost.com)
Walton’s story of selfless giving should be taken as an example for us humans. At times we narrow our vision in on only ourselves while we should be broadening our scope of view to help those in need.
Let us follow not only Walton’s leading, but instead turn our hearts to the example set by God for “In all things I have shown you that by working hard in this way we must help the weak and remember the words of the Lord Jesus, how he himself said, ‘It is more blessed to give than to receive.’” (Acts 20:35)
