The Sensitive Issue of Homosexuality

This is a response to an article published by Yahoo News and The Daily Beast about Christians and the issue of homosexuality.

I do not usually get involved with politics and I am not a religious-conservative. I am a follower of Jesus Christ and I believe in God’s laws. The Holy Bible is what I base my life on and I’m not pushing religion on anyone.

Homosexuality and queer are two words I used to hear back in the 1960’s and 1970’s when people were referring to individuals who chose same sex partners. Today they are referred to as Gays, Lesbians, Bi-sexual, etc. No matter what people call them or how they think of themselves, this is a sensitive issue.  I’m going to attempt to approach this subject without prejudice.

When I was nineteen years old- -in the 1970’s, I met a person who I thought was a guy with long hair. I was attracted to him. He sounded like a guy, dressed like a guy and his motions were masculine-like. His body shape was even masculine. The problem was “he” was a girl. I felt really guilty because I was attracted to him/her. I never felt these feelings for a girl before. I never acted sexually toward this girl, but the feelings and thoughts had been there. It was very confusing. I hung out with her for a month and met the true person she was inside. She had been sexually abused as a child by her own father. She was 20 years old and he was not a part of her life any longer. Males turned her off and I felt sorry for her. People would look at me like I was strange, and they used to call us queers and homos. I’m sorry to say, I had to end our friendship because I could not face the remarks and the prejudice she faced every day. One thing I knew for sure was that she was a hurting human being and she needed a friend. She ended up committing suicide and I’ll never forget the guilt I carried because of her death. Sin was prevalent then and is terribly prevalent now in this world we are living in.

I am a Christian and because I love God and His law so much, I would like to take a stand for His Word. I know God doesn’t wish for anyone to perish and spend eternity in hell fire; but He is a holy God and his standards will not permit evil and sin to enter His eternal heaven. He is a loving God.  Yes, He is also forgiving; but only towards people who choose Jesus and the salvation He offers. Then they need to repent (change their evil choices-fleshly-sinful urges which are temptations introduced from the evil one). We are separated from God by sin. God has made a very strong point in His Word that homosexuality is definitely a sin. I know that I will offend the gay community in this 21st Century, but it is my Christian duty to state the facts. God is, He always was, and will always be the sovereign ruler of all of us. He is everyone’s judge, and there will be that ultimate judgment day when everyone will have to face the choices they made in this lifetime. I’m not here to judge, I am representing God who wishes to save your lives. God’s Word is the final truth that everyone needs to heed.

1 Corinthians 5:9,11(NIV)—9) I have written you in my letter not to associate with sexually immoral people— 11) But now I am writing you that you must not associate with anyone who calls himself a brother but is sexually immoral or greedy, an idolater or a slanderer, a drunkard or a swindler. With such a man do not even eat.

1 Corinthians 6:9-10(NIV)—9) Do you not know that the wicked will not inherit the kingdom of God? Do not be deceived: Neither the sexually immoral nor idolaters nor adulterers nor male prostitutes nor homosexual offenders 10) nor thieves nor the greedy nor drunkards nor slanderers nor swindlers will inherit the kingdom of God.

As a Christian, for me to be obedient to my Heavenly Father- God, I am asked to not associate with homosexuals and all the others stated above. I’m not here to judge any of you. God has made His point of whom He does not accept. I want to warn you- -in Christ’s love–that you need to repent. People who struggle with these evil desires should not continue in these practices. In a permissive society it is easy for Christians to overlook or tolerate some immoral behaviors (greed, drunkenness, etc.) while remaining outraged at others (homosexuality, thievery). We must not participate in sin or condone it in any way, nor may we be selective about what we condemn or excuse. Staying away from more “acceptable” forms of sin is difficult, but it is no harder for us than it was for the Corinthians. God expects his followers in any age to have high standards.

Galatians 5:19-21(NIV)—19) The acts of the sinful nature are obvious: sexual immorality, impurity and debauchery; 20) idolatry and witchcraft; hatred, discord, jealousy, fits of rage, selfish ambition, dissensions, factions 21) and envy, drunkenness, orgies, and the like. I warn you, as I did before, that those who live like this will not inherit the kingdom of God.

Romans 1:18Romans 2:15 is a very important part of Scripture for everyone to read. It explains about God’s wrath against mankind and God’s righteous judgment. (Romans 1:27(NIV)—In the same way the men also abandoned natural relations with women and were inflamed with lust for one another. Men committed indecent acts with other men, and received in themselves the due penalty for their perversion.)

The due penalty for sin is death. This is why God sent Jesus to die for our sins so that we could repent and be forgiven of our sins. By believing in and accepting Jesus in our heart is our only chance– the only way to reconcile with the Father in heaven so that we may have an eternal existence with Him. There are so many people who don’t believe this fact and think that Christians are so narrow minded that we cannot see other sided views. We are told in Matthew 7:13-14 to: 13) “Enter by the narrow gate; for wide is the gate and broad is the way that leads to destruction, and there are many who go in by it. 14) Because narrow is the gate and difficult is the way which leads to life, and there are few who find it.”

This is not a joke or some scare tactic for the unsaved. It is God’s truth and He does detest and abhors homosexuality and sin of any kind. The only way to tell everyone is to show proof in the Word of God, because the Word is the whole truth. People who ignore the truth and do not believe in the Word of God are doomed; and I am so sorry for your souls. I pray that you accept Jesus into your life as your Personal Savior soon; and repent so you may be reconciled to God before it is too late.

Christians are not the victims here. The victims are the ones who are choosing a lifestyle that God does not accept. Their choice of a homosexual, or gay existence in modern terms, is a death sentence. Everyone is responsible for their own choices, and this determines where they will live for eternity.  There is life after death and God wishes for you to live it with Him. It is your choice.

  1. Susan,
Thanks for posting this article. You dealt with this matter very gently and honestly. I believe I represent all of us here at The Bottom Line when I say we do not desire to see anyone perish, but that all should be reconciled with God through Jesus Christ. We are not here to judge, but rather to encourage people to embrace the Truth of our Lord and Savior and what He says in His Word.

  2. Christians are faced with a dilemma today. If we lower our standards we are called hypocrites; if we keep our standards high in accordance with biblical truth we are labeled intolerant. Which one would people prefer us to be?

    • John,

I am just happy to know that no matter what label people choose to give us for our stances, that no man can pluck us from the Father’s Hand (John 1:29). Also, I am thankful that the foundation of my esteem is through Christ and not determined by labels that men may give me for my beliefs. God bless.

      • I agree. No matter what people want to call me I will remain faithful to God’s truth.

        • Neither.
We are called hypocrites because we talk about Love and do not exhibit Love to all people.

We are called intolerant because we do not deal with others with love.

“Though I speak with the tongues of men and of angels, and have not Love, I am become as sounding brass, or a tinkling cymbal.” 1 Cor 13:1

Scripture is simple: Love God; Love People; Go Teach.

I am required to love all people. My love to them does not remove their accountability to God. I am accountable to God to Love. I am a hypocrite when I talk about Love and do not show it. I am intolerant when I believe I am responsible for changing other people’s lives.

          • Very well stated. We are intolerant when we believe we are responsible for changing other people. I have never heard it put that way. That was a light bulb going on in my thinking. Thank you.

  3. “Today I have given you the choice between life and death, between blessings and curses. Now I call on heaven and earth to witness the choice you make. Oh, that you would choose life, so that you and your descendants might live! Deuteronomy 30:19
I am he that liveth, and was dead; and, behold, I am alive for evermore, Amen; and have the keys of hell and of death. Rev.1:18
Though Christ holds the keys, He wants everyone to understand that they make the choice for themselves in this matter. He does not send us into eternal darkness with brimstone and fire that can’t be quenched (which is a picture of hell and there will be no partying there). We chose this for ourselves. So no blaming God for sending anybody there. He gave us the free will to call the shots where our eternal destiny will become. So He pleads with us to awaken out of our ignorance and short-sightedness to the reality that awaits us when we die.
He encourages us to make the wise choice that brings about a blessed future for us here and for eternity in His kingdom where there is no more sorrow or suffering, diseases, fighting, or growing old and feeble.
He knows what is at the end of the road in this life and has informed us through His word. That is how much He cares for you and me!

  4. Christians have to make a choice, too, either follow God or man. I choose to follow God and His Word.
1 Timothy 4:16(NKJV)–Take heed to yourself and to the doctrine. Continue in them, for in doing this you will save both yourself and those who hear you.

It was told beforehand that people would fall from the truth in the end times, and such times are here, I choose to follow the word to the end. We all have a choice.
2 Timothy 4:3-5(NKJV)–3) For the time will come when they will not endure sound doctrine, but according to their own desires, because they have itching ears, they will heap up for themselves teachers; 4)and they will turn their ears away from the truth, and be turned aside to fables. 5)But you be watchful in all things, endure afflictions, do the work of an evangelist, fulfill your ministry.

Man cannot hurt me because I have God on my side. Man’s words cannot deter me from helping to fulfill His Great Commission. I just pray that I stay humble during this course of ministry. Praise God and may it all be for His Glory. Amen

  5. We as human beings have all sinned and fall short of God’s glory (Romans 3:23). Whether the sin is disobedience, murder, stealing, cheating, lying, adultery, homosexuality or any other choice that we make which goes against God’s rules, it is all seen as the same in His eyes. (James 2:9-11) When our foundation for what is right and wrong is created by us, the truth becomes distorted and what is wrong is no longer seen as inappropriate because we have changed the rules to fit our needs and the truth cannot be seen by those of this world. “For the god of this world (Satan) has blinded the unbelievers’ minds [that they should not discern the truth], preventing them from seeing the illuminating light of the Gospel of the glory of Christ…”
(2 Corinthians 4:4). Unless we have Christ in us, we are unable to see the truth of God’s word for what it is a foundation for living. The rules are put in place so that we are aware of what we are not supposed to do. God has given us free will to make choices in this world. We either choose His will for us or our own. If one chooses to live a homosexual lifestyle, that is a choice they have made, just like if one chooses to lead an adulterous life. However, God sees both equally as sin. Like Paul who chose to be all things to all people (1 Corinthians 9:19-23),we as Christians are called to love everyone regardless of their choices. We do not condone their actions or behaviors, but instead, it is our responsibility to reveal the truth so that none shall perish.

  6. You nailed it, Renee. Satan has blinded people’s minds from seeing the light of the Gospel. That tells us how to pray. Our specific prayer for all people should be that they will recognize the lies of Satan and their minds and hearts will be open to the light of God’s saving grace.

  7. I agree with all the above statements for God desires that no man perish.John3:16″For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life.” God loves murderers, liars and homosexuals but as pointed out in Susan’s article; He is a just God who cannot tolerate the sin of homosexuality. We are not judging the homosexual we are just telling the plain truth that homosexuality is a sin and those who choose to practice this unnatural sexual orientation will not inherit the Kingdom Of God. I as Paul would gladly spend eternity in hell, instead of living with my blessed Savior forever, and I would give up my salvation as a Born Again Christian if only one person who chose the homosexual lifestyle would give it up for Jesus.God ‘s heart bleeds for the homosexual as Jesus gave up his lifeblood that the homosexual would be saved from hell for eternity.

  8. Susan,
Excellent stand for the truth.Thank you

  9. Susan,
Thank you for your honesty about your friend. I think the most revealing words in your post are:

People would look at me like I was strange, and they used to call us queers and homos. I’m sorry to say, I had to end our friendship because I could not face the remarks and the prejudice she faced every day. One thing I knew for sure was that she was a hurting human being and she needed a friend.

Think about the remarks and comments we make to people. How we are prejudice to others because of the the sin they choose to live. We will be called names for befriending sinners. It is very hard to be willing to show love and compassion to sinners. Sinners are hurting people and they need friends. Sinners need Christians who truly care and love them as God’s creation.

I hope, next time, you will have the courage to befriend a person living in sin. To withstand the crowd condemning them, and to focus on the needs of the hurting individual.

  10. I was so young (19) at that time. I have learned so much since I became a Christian at 32. I know I am a sinner and I do not have a right to condemn other sinners. I have learned what love is through Christ’s love for us. I praise God everyday for His mercy and strength. Thank you for your comments, Jeff.

  11. You have presented a very profound article here Susan. I will just add one thing: Remember to hate the sin and not the sinner.

  12. amen. I am blessed to know that believers in CHRIST remain to please GOD despite of the world’s persecution regarding the matter. Thanks sister Susan. To GOD be the glory in your life.

  13. 21 Yes, they knew God, but they wouldn’t worship him as God or even give him thanks. And they began to think up foolish ideas of what God was like. As a result, their minds became dark and confused. 22 Claiming to be wise, they instead became utter fools. 23 And instead of worshiping the glorious, ever-living God, they worshiped idols made to look like mere people and birds and animals and reptiles.
24 So God abandoned them to do whatever shameful things their hearts desired. As a result, they did vile and degrading things with each other’s bodies. 25 They traded the truth about God for a lie. So they worshiped and served the things God created instead of the Creator himself, who is worthy of eternal praise! Amen. 26 That is why God abandoned them to their shameful desires. Even the women turned against the natural way to have sex and instead indulged in sex with each other. 27 And the men, instead of having
normal sexual relations with women, burned with lust for each other. Men did shameful things with other men, and as a result of this sin, they suffered within themselves the penalty they deserved.
    Book of Roman chapter 1

  14. Most Christians have missed the point. Holding a righteous standard against sins like homosexuality, doesn’t shine a light into the darkness, it’s just pushing back, and on and on it goes. Making a change won’t come from adding to the age-old struggle, but only by truly understanding what is behind the whole gender issue. It’s all part of God’s marvelous plan, His relationship with mankind. If you follow the relationship model that has been the norm since the beginning, and that it portrays God (male) with mankind (female) in a marriage or “oneness.” Then, it doesn’t take much imagination to see just what the “real” issue is: What is being portrayed by man with man or woman with woman relationships, is God with God and mankind with mankind. Either way, humanity faces godless relationship, alone. … But not to worry, the sign of the rainbow? It still means the same thing.
