Our Hope: Still Waters

What are still waters?  Why do we equate water with God?  The truth is that God has placed the words water, waters, and watered in strategic verses in scripture.  He uses water as a force to be reckoned with, a place of calm, and a substance that nurtures souls.

‘And the LORD will guide you continually and satisfy your desire in scorched places and make your bones strong; and you shall be like a watered garden, like a spring of water, whose waters do not fail.’ Isaiah 58:11 (ESV)

In the beginning, God created water.  He saw it was good.  But it is how He uses it, and how it touches our lives each and every day, that is truly the miracle of His creation.  Because water, while we often take it for granted, is very special.  It’s properties are varied, and many.  God made it available immediately, to all who required it.  Through the ages, water has played a huge role in developing life, homes, and even countries.  It can make or break a human, or a nation.  It is phenomenal simply in what it is.

‘In the beginning, God created the heavens and the earth.  The earth was without form and void, and darkness was over the face of the earth.  And the Spirit of God was hovering over the face of the waters.’  Genesis 1:1 (ESV)

God didn’t stop there!  He goes on to incorporate the importance of water in many aspects of our lives, and in the life of this planet.  When we have water, all is well.  But without it, we shrivel and die.  This happens to all life.  However, when water is plentiful, and easy to obtain, we take it for granted, forgetting how very valuable it is to all life.  But the moment it is out of reach, humans, animals, and plant life thirst.  If they are not soon sated with life-giving water, all will die.

‘Blessed is the man who trusts in the LORD, whose trust is the LORD.  He is like a tree planted by the water, that sends out its roots by the stream, and does not fear when heat comes, for its leaves remain green, and is not anxious in the year of drought, for it does not cease to bear fruit.’  Jeremiah 17:8 (ESV)

Water is surely life.  When God sent His son, Jesus the Christ, to this earth to save the world, He knew He would become known as Living Water.  Once we take a drink from Him, no amount of drought, no time of loss, will make us shrivel and die.  He replenishes us daily, through His love, through His Word, and through our faith.  Jesus brings refreshing of our souls, which in turn revives the flesh, when He leads us, guides us, and reminds us of the value of His kind of water…Living.

‘The LORD is my Shepherd; I shall not want.  He makes me lie down in green pastures.  He leads me beside still waters.  He leads me in paths of righteousness for His names sake.’  Psalm 23:1:4 (ESV)

Living Water is rushing, and cold.  It is fresh, and soothing.  It is peace, and the end of calamity.  It is Jesus.  He is Our Hope, and He offers us Living Water every day, every moment of our existence.  If we drink from Him, we will never thirst.

Blessings!
