I’m sure many of us are familiar with the classic children’s song, “He’s Got the Whole World in His Hands”, but how much have we stopped to think about what this means and the amount of hope that this gives us. Let’s explore.
Elohim the Creator
If we go back to the original manuscripts for the Holy Bible, we see something very special in the very first verse of the Book of Genesis. The name “Elohim” is used for God, which is a plural form of His name. This signals us that God the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit all played a role in the creation of the universe. Therefore, I think it’s a safe assumption that they all maintain providence over it.
Above with Love
Let’s look at a very special verse. It highlights that God is very much engaged with the earth and He’s much bigger than it. In fact, He makes us seem like grasshoppers compared to Him; yet He still loves us beyond measure.
Isaiah 40:22 It is he that sitteth upon the circle of the earth, and the inhabitants thereof are as grasshoppers; that stretcheth out the heavens as a curtain, and spreadeth them out as a tent to dwell in.
Isn’t it amazing that our God, who is infinite, loves little us?
The Right Hand of Righteousness
Another wonderful thing about the providence of the Lord is that He upholds us little grasshoppers with His Mighty Right Hand. Yes, that’s right. Not even a sparrow falls without the loving knowledge of the Lord, and we are so much more valuable to him (Matt 10:29-31). Because we are so precious to Him, we have nothing to fear. Not in life, and not even in death.
Isaiah 41:10 Fear thou not; for I am with thee: be not dismayed; for I am thy God: I will strengthen thee; yea, I will help thee; yea, I will uphold thee with the right hand of my righteousness.
The Mightiest of Grips
I remember being a child. I used to love when my grandfather would give me tight bear hugs and I would have to see if I could try to escape. It was a little game. Of course, my grandfather always let me escape, but for him it was all about interacting with his grandchild in a loving way.
The Lord grips us similarly, but there is no escaping His grip. In fact, the grip is so inescapable that no man can pull you from His Hand. It’s really that powerful. Like my grandfather’s grip, it is done out of great love. God truly does have the whole world in His Hand, including us as individuals.
John 10:29 My Father, which gave them me, is greater than all; and no man is able to pluck them out of my Father’s hand.
Final Thought
So much can be said about how closely our Lord secures His creation and those that would follow Him. However, the Bible even goes on to declare that He directs His love towards us even while we are yet still sinners (Romans 5:8). What great hope there is in knowing that He who holds everything in His Hands is filled with love and an unstoppable desire to protect us even from our own mistakes. Therefore, Our Hope is knowing that He has the whole world in His Hands, which includes you and me. Thank you for reading and God bless.
