Commentary on Elections and Godly Governance
As election day approaches, the air is thick with tension and anticipation. The stress of choosing between opposing ballots can weigh heavily on hearts and minds. Yet, as Christians, we are called to judiciously enter into these times with wisdom, prayer, and a steadfast commitment to God’s commandments.
The Bible reminds us in Romans 13:1: “Let every soul be subject unto the higher powers. For there is no power but of God: the powers that be are ordained of God.” This scripture encourages us to respect the authorities,3 and the governance established, recognizing that ultimately, God is in control.
Insights on Opposing Ballots
When faced with opposing ballots, it is crucial to evaluate each option through the lens of God’s Word. Proverbs 3:5-6 advises, “Trust in the Lord with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding. In all thy ways acknowledge him, and he shall direct thy paths.” By seeking God’s guidance, we can make decisions that align with His will and commandments.
Jesus Himself taught us about the balance of civic duty and spiritual devotion in Matthew 22:21: “Render therefore unto Caesar the things which are Caesar’s; and unto God the things that are God’s.” This verse underscores the importance of fulfilling our responsibilities as citizens while prioritizing our commitment to God.
Handling Heightened Tensions
In times of heightened political tension, it is easy to harbor malice towards those with opposing views. However, Ephesians 4:31-32 instructs us: “Let all bitterness, and wrath, and anger, and clamour, and evil speaking, be put away from you, with all malice: And be ye kind one to another, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, even as God for Christ’s sake hath forgiven you.” We are called to replace malice with kindness and forgiveness, reflecting Christ’s love in our interactions.
Exercising Your Right to Vote
Voting is a God-given right and a civic duty. James 1:5 encourages us to seek wisdom from God: “If any of you lack wisdom, let him ask of God, that giveth to all men liberally, and upbraideth not; and it shall be given him.” As we approach the ballot box, let us pray for discernment and wisdom to make choices that honor God and promote justice and righteousness.
Reflective Questions
- How can I ensure my decisions align with God’s commandments?
- Am I harboring any malice towards those with differing political views?
- How can I actively seek God’s guidance in my voting decisions?
Closing Prayer
” LORD, as we approach this election- Grant us the wisdom to discern Your will and the courage to act upon it. Help us to cast aside any malice or bitterness and to engage with others in love and respect. Guide our leaders and those in positions of power to make decisions that are just and righteous. We trust in Your sovereignty and seek to honor You in all that we do. In Jesus’ name, we pray. Amen.”
Ponder Before Election Day
Meditate on Micah 6:8: “He hath shewed thee, O man, what is good; and what doth the Lord require of thee, but to do justly, and to love mercy, and to walk humbly with thy God?” Let this verse guide your thoughts and actions as you prepare to vote, seeking to do justly, love mercy, and walk humbly with God.
May God bless you and guide you in this important time.
Please vote. I have read from different sources that in the U.S. 40 million Christians do not vote. This number of people could easily overturn an election.
Amen. Yes, PLEASE VOTE!
Thanks John for your comment.
God Bless~
Thank you for these good reminders and directions from Scripture. In free countries, we have an awesome, and wonderful privilege of voting. It is extremely important that we evaluate candidates and their positions relative to Scripture.
Along with John Clark, I repeat, Please vote.
Thank you kindly Dale for your words and encouragement.
And as I’ve said in reply to John – PLEASE VOTE!
God Bless~
