Spiritual Security In A Troubled World

In these times of uncertainty with global events, wars, and the total breakdown of society, security will not be found in corrupt governments, world leaders (of which there are none at this moment in time), the COVID vaccine, or anything that humanity can invent or discover. Many have come to realize that money, success, or fame, is not the source of security. They might have “gained the whole world, but lost their souls”(Matthew 16:26). Some of the most successful and secure , or I should say “insecure” people, have taken their own lives.

What has been gained by wanting more and more money and success? Nothing! It has been said that one has never seen a hearse pulling a U-Haul. Content can be another word for security, for without contentment there is no security. However, First Timothy 6:6-10 says, “Godliness with contentment is great gain, for we brought nothing into this world, and we cannot take anything out of the world. But if we have food and clothing, with these we will be content.” Now we all know that in this day and age we need more than food or clothing, but the point of these verses is to be content with the simple basic needs of life. The great mathematician and physicist, Blaise Pascal, said, “There is a God-shaped vacuum in the heart of every person which cannot be satisfied by any created thing, but only by God the Creator, made known through Jesus Christ.”

Psalm 62:2 has some very relevant words for our troubled world. “God alone is my rock and salvation, my fortress; I shall not be greatly shaken.” A fortress is a military stronghold. It is something not susceptible to outside influences or disturbances. God is our stronghold against the deception perpetrated by the evil schemes of humanity that can be a source of false security. Colossians 2:8 says, “See to it that no one takes you captive by philosophy and empty deceit, according to human tradition, according to the elemental spirits of the world, and not according to Christ.”

The world offers a false peace and security. “While people are saying, ‘There is peace and security,’ sudden destruction will come upon them as labor pains come upon a pregnant woman, and they will not escape”(First Thessalonians 5:3). Jesus, however, says just the opposite. “Peace I leave with you, my peace I give to you . Not as the world gives you do I give to you. Let not your hearts be troubled, neither let them be afraid”(John 14:27). Psalm 121:7-8 further adds, “The Lord will keep you from all evil; he will keep your life. The Lord will keep your going out and your  coming in from this time forth and forevermore.” Claim God’s protection over the lives of yourself and your family!

No matter how bad things get in this present world, there is also spiritual security after this life, for those who have accepted Jesus as their Savior. First Corinthians 3:16 says that “God’s spirit dwells within you.” Not only this, but you “were sealed with the promised Holy Spirit, who is the guarantee of our inheritance until we acquire possession of it, to the praise of his glory”(Ephesians 1:13-14). Second Corinthians 1:22 adds, “who has put his seal on us and given his Spirit in our hearts as a guarantee.” In the culture of that time, a seal placed on something was used to guarantee security or ownership. In the case of the indwelling Holy Spirit, it guarantees our redemption and salvation!

In our present time, the issue that needs the most attention is finding security in God. Heed the words of Psalm 56:3-4. “When I am afraid, I will put my trust in you. In God, whose word I praise, in God I trust, I shall not be afraid. What can flesh do to me?” Remain strong in the faith. Stay true to the truth of God’s Word. Stay vigilant to what is happening in the world. Don’t give in to lies and deception. Whether in this world or what comes after, find your security in God alone!

  1. I can say with certainty that this way of thinking and living out life is exact. Those things that people seek after think these things can bring inward peace, comfort, and security so they go after it in all the wrong ways and places but it can’t be found in materialism or even other people. It is a flawed and wasteful existence to chase after temporal stuff that captivates the heart. We see the results of this in a disposable society.
Never can we be permanently satisfied because these things cannot give us true fulfillment. No reason to seek after the perishables.
The enemy of our soul works on everyone who is willing to listen to his lies just as Adam and Eve did. Think about everything they had for living a wonderful existence until that fatal mistake when they wanted a higher position in life than God gave them. Just a short conversation with the evil one caused doubt and dissatisfaction only to bring sorrow and death upon them and all mankind.
Thank you for this powerful message, John.

  2. So true John.
A friend and I were discussing this only yesterday and most of what you’ve mentioned here in your fine article.
    Nicely said, good message.
    God Bless~
