Is There A Prophetic Significance To The Coming Solar Eclipse?

It is being called the “Great American Eclipse of 2024.” On April 8, 2024 there will be a solar eclipse moving from the south to the northeast across America. Seven years ago in 2o17 there was another solar eclipse seen moving across the U.S. from the north to the southeast. These two eclipses are forming a giant “X” across the U.S. What is even more interesting is that the eclipse on April 8th will pass over several towns named “Nineveh.”

The City of Nineveh is mentioned in the Book of Jonah in the Old Testament. It was built by Nimrod (Genesis 10:11), who also built the Tower of Babel in an attitude of rebellion against God. Nineveh was a great urban center, but filled with evil, pagan worship, and witchcraft.

Jonah was told by God to go to Nineveh. After refusing to go the first time (Jonah 1:1-3) he was severely disciplined by God (that is a story in itself) for his disobedience. The second time he obeyed God and called out the evil in the city (Jonah 3:1-4). The people of Nineveh believed God and humbled themselves before him. Even the king made a proclamation stating, “Let everyone turn from his evil way and from the violence that is in his hands. Who knows? God may turn and relent and turn from his fierce anger, so that we may not perish” (Jonah 3:6-10).

Disclaimer: I am not in any way even implying that the towns in the U.S. named Nineveh are like Nineveh in the Book of Jonah. (The eclipse is also passing over a town in Texas named Jonah). However, it does bring to mind that America is in the same situation as Nineveh was, but it humbled itself before God and repented. Unlike the king who responded to Jonah’s prophecy of destruction and declared an edict of repentance, America’s president is not about to do the same.

God is being very patient with America and with many other nations that have fallen into the prophecy of Romans 1-where “God gave them up in the lusts of their hearts to impurity…God gave then up to dishonorable passions…And since they did not see fit to acknowledge God, God gave them up to a debased mind to do what ought not to be done.” (Romans 1:24-32)

Romans 2:4-5 offers two alternatives. “Do you presume on the riches of his kindness and forbearance and patience, not knowing that God’s kindness is meant to lead you to repentance? But because of your hard and impenitent heart you are storing up wrath for yourself on the day of  wrath when God’s righteous judgment will be revealed.”

A very common verse often quoted is 2 Chronicles 7:14. ”If my people who are called by my name humble themselves and pray and seek my face and turn from their wicked ways, then I will hear from heaven and will forgive their sin and heal their land.”  This verse can apply to any nation. Sadly, I have heard this verse quoted leaving out the phrase, “and turn from their wicked ways.”

Some people are saying that the “X” across America being formed by the two eclipses is a bad omen for this nation. They could be correct. What do you think? Whatever the case may be, America is at a crossroads like the city of Nineveh was. Will there be repentance, or will there be the judgment of God?
